Dear Families,
Worthington City Schools Portrait of a Learner Survey
Following our successful fall launch, Worthington City Schools is preparing for our second administration of the Portrait of a Learner Survey, March 16th-27th. This tool allows us to move beyond traditional academics to measure the "durable skills" our community values most, the mindsets and habits that will serve our students throughout their time in Worthington and beyond.
The fall results provided us with a baseline; this spring window is about reflection and growth. It allows us to see how the strategies we’ve used this year are supporting our students.
The Portrait of a Learner survey continues to focus on:
- Measuring Progress: Comparing spring results to fall data to see how students are growing in the skills our community prioritizes.
- Refining Our Approach: Using student feedback to adjust how we support "Durable Skills" and Executive Function (such as task initiation, emotional control, and organization).
- Supporting the Whole Child: Ensuring our daily classroom focus remains aligned with the mindset and habits students need for success in Worthington and beyond.
The survey remains age-appropriate, tiered by grade level, and includes a preparatory lesson:
- Grades 3–5: 15 questions
By checking in a second time, we can celebrate their progress and fine-tune our efforts where they are needed most.
If you have any questions or would like to opt your student out of this spring window, please contact us at 614-450-5300.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us grow alongside our students.
Respectfully,
Dr. Jenny Wielinski

Sexual Abuse Prevention Notification
January 16, 2026
Dear Brookside Families,
Ohio Revised Code requires that school districts deliver annual lessons for Ohio’s K-6 students in child sexual abuse prevention. The portions of the law that outline the requirements for child sexual abuse prevention are often referred to as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law is named after Erin Merryn, who after working in her home state of Illinois to pass legislation requiring sexual abuse prevention lessons in 2009, has worked to expand the program to 38 states, including Ohio.
In order to meet the requirements of the law, Worthington Schools school counselors will be delivering a one-day lesson to students aimed at helping students prevent sexual abuse and keep themselves safe.
School counselors will begin teaching age-appropriate sexual abuse prevention lessons in the month of February. While the legislation requires Ohio schools to teach sexual abuse prevention, given the sensitive nature of the topic, parents do have the right to opt their children out of receiving the instruction. Should you prefer your child to be excused, please contact your child’s school principal or school counselor. Students not participating in the lesson will be provided an alternate location in the school for supervised school activities.
Worthington Schools counselors will utilize instructional materials from Fight Child Abuse, developed by the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation, for the required lessons. For a broad overview of the program, you can visit the website at fightchildabuse.org. Lessons will focus on unsafe and unwanted physical contact in a one-day classroom lesson. Should you have additional questions regarding the requirements of the law or instructional materials, please contact me at rmessenheimer@wscloud.org.
Sincerely,
Rob Messenheimer Dr. Jenny Wielinski

Atentamente,,
Rob Messenheimer Dr. Jenny Wielinski

PORTUGUESE
January 16, 2026

Worthington Schools: Let’s Stay in the Game!
September is Attendance Awareness Month, and Worthington Schools is kicking things off with a special partnership! We’re teaming up with Stay in the Game and our regional partner, the Columbus Crew, to promote strong attendance and keep our students “in the game” all year long.
Why does attendance matter so much? Missing just two days of school a month can add up to over three weeks in a school year—that’s considered chronic absence. And just like on the field, being part of the team every day makes all the difference for learning, growth, and success.
Throughout September, schools in Worthington and across our region will be celebrating with fun, themed activities to highlight the importance of showing up. Together, we’ll cheer on our students and encourage everyone to build strong attendance habits.
Families are key teammates in this effort. To learn more, check out Stay in the Game’s Family Resources. You can even show your support by taking the Attendance Pledge—let’s make attendance a winning goal!
By working together, we can keep our students in the game and set them up for success—on and off the field.
See a video from members of the Columbus Crew HERE. And, then sign the STAY IN THE GAME pledge.
Mumkin pickup is on September 23rd from 5-7pm on the Brookside front lawn. McGinnis’ Grill food truck will be there so you can also pick up dinner and your Mumkins!
The PTA is in need of volunteers to help organize the mums off the truck and help parents with their pickup order. Please sign up here to help with Mumkin pickups.

May 2, 2025
As the weather improves and more families walk and bike to school, please be sure you are observing road safety laws and educating your student(s) as well. Please always stay vigilant.
- Pedestrians: Where neither sidewalk nor shoulder is available, pedestrians shall walk as near to the outside edge of the roadway and only on the left side of the roadway, facing traffic. Any pedestrian upon a roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway. Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.
- Cyclists: Cyclists should ride on the right half of the roadway, riding with traffic instead of against it.
- Drivers: Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks.

NO -SCHOOL
We do not have school on Friday, October 18th.
Fall Parties Guidelines - Oct. 31
Fall parties will be on October 31st this year. For the safety and consideration of all students, we ask that you please adhere to these policies:
-
Students may not wear costumes to school. If they bring a costume, it must be something that can easily slip over what they are wearing. We do not have the time or space for students to change clothes.
-
No masks or face paint in school.
-
Keep in mind that we have students who are as young as five. So, please, no scary or inappropriate costumes. Also, plastic weapons are prohibited, as always.
-
All food snacks that you arranged with your child's teacher to send to school must be pre-packaged and include a list of ingredients before the party.
BUTTER BRAIDS
Did you try a sample of these delicious pastries at the Fall Fest? Brochures with ordering instructions will be sent home with students next week; parents will also receive an email with instructions on obtaining an individual sales link for their student. These pastries come frozen and travel well and make a great addition to any holiday meal. Take a moment to call a few neighbors or grandparents or post your child's link on your social media. The last date to order will be November 6th, and pickup will be at the school on November 19th.
REFLECTIONS
Brookside PTA is participating in the Reflections Art Program this year! You can find an ENTRY FORM and RULES. An additional email will follow.
4th and 5th graders will work on projects in Art Class and will have the choice whether or not they want to submit their artwork. I also hope to see participation from K-3 students, but this would need to be completed at home, as we are focusing on other projects during art class.
